Public Policy - Raising Expectations Consultation

Summary: RNIB response to public policies.

Raising Expectations: enabling the system to deliver' (DIUS)

RNIB responded to the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills' consultation on transferring funding from the Learning and Skills Council to local authorities for 14-19 education and training. RNIB welcomed this transfer of responsibility, believing local authorities are well-placed to achieve an integrated and coherent approach to the education and training of this age group. However RNIB did express its concern about the capacity of local authorities to deliver services to support blind or partially sighted young people in education - namely the challenge to ensure that an appropriate and engaging learning opportunity is accessible to every 14-19 year old

Jenny's story - Jenny Burgess volunteered for a disability support group run by people with physical disabilities. She was the only staff member with a sight problem. “I depended on a colleague with physical disabilities to give me a lift to work. I have far greater mobility problems than most people with physical disabilities who can drive a car, yet receive less benefit - it’s unfair and unjust.” Join our campaign to make the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance fair - taken for a ride.
